Why rollups matter
Users often look at quarter and year views first. If the grouped periods do not match the intended calendar or fiscal structure, the summary will feel wrong even when each lower-level value is correct. Rollups matter anywhere you review a model above its base granularity. How rollups work in Oculon
Oculon groups lower-level periods into higher-level periods based on the model’s time structure and fiscal year assumptions. In the current docs set, the common rollup paths are:- months into quarters
- months into years
- quarters into years
Common rollup paths
Monthly to quarterly
Three monthly periods are grouped into one quarter based on the model calendar and fiscal year setup.Monthly to yearly
All months in the fiscal year are grouped into the same yearly summary.Quarterly to yearly
Quarterly models still need yearly summaries. In that case, the yearly result groups the quarters that belong to the same fiscal year.Rollups versus aggregation
Rollups and aggregation are closely related, but they are not the same thing.Rollupsdecide which periods are grouped together.Time aggregationdecides what number should represent that group.
- A quarterly revenue view rolls up January, February, and March into one quarter.
- Aggregation then decides that the quarter should show the sum of those months.
What to review if rollups look wrong
If quarter or year groupings do not match expectations, check:- the model granularity
- the model date range
- fiscal year assumptions
- whether the view is showing calendar or fiscal expectations
- whether the issue is really aggregation rather than grouping
