# Dimension best practices

A strong dimension structure improves both model quality and reporting quality.

## Recommended practices

* Name dimensions after the business concept, not the current report.
* Keep values mutually clear and easy to explain.
* Avoid overlapping categories inside the same dimension.
* Reuse shared dimensions instead of recreating them in multiple places.
* Decide early whether you need a hierarchy or a flat list.

## Keep the reporting audience in mind

If a stakeholder cannot understand the dimension in a board or view without extra explanation, the structure is probably too complex.
